Social & Sober: Game Night Edition
HAVING A GET TOGETHER
Here’s the good news—you don’t have to chug lukewarm beer that Todd brought out of a red solo cup anymore. You can still enjoy inviting your friends over to play your favorite classic games, without needing to use alcohol as a social ice breaker.
First, and most importantly, let’s set the vibe. Have you ever heard that a way to a person’s heart is through their stomach? It’s true. And now that you won’t be pumping your guests full of booze, you have the opportunity to remix the space your bar once occupied.
Putting together a sweet buffet with skittles, jolly ranchers, licorice or whatever your favorite candy is, adds a stunning statement piece to your sober game night! Get some clear jars and place them where you want to organize your candy bar and fill them with your favorite sweet treats.
Social and sober tip: Don’t have time to get containers? CVS Pharmacy has an assortment of movie box candies. Great for when you don’t want Todd’s fingers in your containers.
After all that sweet stuff, you’re definitely going to want some salty stuff to balance it out. We’re all about balance here. If candy is not your thing, stock up on some fun new drinks! [Insert drink list here]. If you feel comfortable enough to use non-alcoholic replacements, check out our Happier Hour tab.
Also, music. Don’t forget the music! Here is a fun and eclectic playlist we’ve created just for you.
Okay, the mood is set. Having a hard time recalling a game other than king’s cup and quarters? No problem, we’ll jog your memory.
FISH BOWL: If you’re looking for a game to get your game night started, Fish Bowl combines Catch Phrase and Charades to make for a hilarious guessing game perfect for a larger group of people. Every player writes down three words or phrases and puts them into a “fish bowl” at the center of the table. Then, separate into teams of two.
In the first round, players take turns guessing by describing the word or phrase. If the team guesses the word before the one-minute timer runs out, they get one point. Remember to keep the paper out of the fish bowl until round two. The second round follows the same pattern, but this time you can only use one word as a spoken clue for your team. In the third round, players must describe the word using only their actions, like charades. The team that guesses the most amount of words correctly wins!
EL PRESIDENTE: El Presidente is a fast-paced card game that will keep your game night entertaining all night! In this card game, players’ positions change each round—the winner becomes the president and the loser becomes the a-hole.
Using two decks, the dealer hands out all the cards to each player. The game always starts with a three of clubs and players take turns stacking cards with a higher rank—any number that is higher than a three. If someone plays a two, they “clear the deck” and take all the cards off the table. If you cannot outrank the card, you can pass, but the game continues until everyone runs out of cards. The first player to run out of their cards is the president and the last is the a-hole. This game is perfect for any group looking to break the ice at their game night!
THE CLASSICS: The basics are the best sometimes—Life, Monopoly, Scrabble and Uno! These game night staples are easy to play, since most of your friends will probably already know how to play!
